The Greek composer Evanghelos Odyssey Papathanassiou, or Vangelis, born in Volos on 29 March 1943. Teenager, he was part of a popular jazz group in Greece in the years 1960, The Forminx, before training, with Demis Roussos and Lukas Sideras, the rock group Aphrodite's Child in 1968. He goes out, en 1971, a solo album with very innovative writing, Make your dream longer than the night, inspired by the Parisian student revolt of May 1968. After the separation of Aphrodite's Child in 1972, Vangelis joins French director Frédéric Rossif to compose sound illustrations for his many documentaries, like The Apocalyspe of the Animals, The Wild Festival or the Song of Creatures, trilogy dedicated to Picasso painters, Braque and Mathieu. The musician then went on to his solo career and released Earth in 1974. He moves to London, set up his own studio and release several discs like Heaven and Hell in 1975, Albedo O.39 en 1976, Spiral in 1977 or Beaubourg in 1978. He also collaborates with Jon Anderson, the singer of Yes, the time of some albums and singles (Jon & Vangelis - Short Stories and Friends of Mr. Cairo in 1980-81). It is his film soundtrack for The Chariots of Fire that will make him very popular in 1981, both in Europe and in the United States, which will allow him to win the Oscar for best film soundtrack. Then it's the movie Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott in 1982, which definitely imposes him as an outstanding composer. He also performs various works such as, inter alia, sound coverings for documentaries by Jacques Cousteau. He released The Mask in 1985, Antartica in 1988 and The City in 1990. En 1992, Vangelis is made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters and composes the soundtrack of 1492 : Christopher Colombus, film directed by Ridley Scott, and 1998 a classic album, El Greco - taking as its subject one of the most important Greek painters, Domenicos Theotokopoulos. After new music for the film by Iannis Smaragdis El GrecoEl Greco (2007), Vangelis composes the Mythodea oratorio on behalf of the Mars mission launched by NASA in 2001 then - in another register - the theme of the soccer world cup (FIFA), the next year.
