Samuel BARBER
Samuel Osborne Barber (March 9, 1910 - January 23, 1981) is an American composer of a famous author including Adagio for Strings. Biography [edit]Born in West Chester (Pennsylvania), he began composing at the age of seven. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia before becoming a student of the American Academy in Rome in 1935. The following year, he wrote his String Quartet in B minor, which he later arrange the second movement to the suggestion of Arturo Toscanini for string orchestra as the Adagio for Strings and for ur hp under the name Agnus Dei. This movement has become very popular: it is used for a state funeral and public memorial services of the United States since the death of Franklin Roosevelt. He can be heard in the final scene of the movie Elephant Man David Lynch, and he was taken as the main theme of the film Platoon by Oliver Stone. The popularity of the Adagio has somewhat overshadowed the rest of his book. None of his other plays have been as successful, but some are regularly performed and recorded. However, Barber is considered one of the most talented American composers of the twentieth century. He avoided the experiments of his contemporaries, preferring harmonies and more traditional forms. His melodic and a work is often described as neo-romantic, although some of his later works, including the Third Essay for Orchestra and Medea's Dance of Vengeance, would show a masterful use of percussive effects, modernism and effects of neo-stravinskiens. His songs, with piano or orchestra, are among the most popular songs of the twentieth century the classical American. They include a version of Matthew Arnold's Dover Beach, originally written for string quartet and baritone, the Hermit Songs from anonymous Irish texts of the eighth century to the thirteenth century and Knoxville: Summer of 1915, written for the soprano Eleanor Steber and based on an autobiographical text by James Agee, introduction of his novel A Death in the Family. Barber had a good baritone voice and, for some time considered a career as a professional singer. He made some recordings, including his own song Dover Beach. His Piano Sonata, Op. 26 (1949), commissioned by Richard Rodgers and Irving Berlin, was first performed by Vladimir Horowitz, the first large American CARRYING piano to be so created by such internationally renowned pianist. Barber also composed several operas. Vanessa, on a libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti (his partner professionally and personally), was created at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Critical acclaim and enjoyed great popular success, the opera will be worth a Pulitzer Prize for its composer. At its European premiere, he was received more coldly, however, remains low and played on this continent, although its popularity is maintained in the United States. Barber composed three concertos for solo instruments and orchestra, a Violin Concerto (completed 1939), Concerto for cello and a piano concerto in which he must add the Capricorn Concerto for flute, oboe, trumpet and string orchestra. The Piano Concerto was composed for the pianist John Browning, who created 24 September 1962, with Erich Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Lincoln Center in New York. Barber also wrote a virtuoso CARRYING for Organ and Orchestra, Toccata Festiva, the famous organist Edward Power Biggs-early 1960. The New York Philharmonic had commissioned an oboe concerto, but Barber never finished the slow central Canzonetta before death. Among his purely orchestral pieces include two symphonies (1936 and 1944), an overture The School for Scandal (1932), three trials for orchestra (1938, 1942 and 1978) and, finally, we Fadograph Yestern Scene (1973). He has also composed choral works large, including The Lovers (1971) and Prayers of Kierkegaard (1954), based on the writings of the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. Besides his sonata, his piano works include Excursions Op. 20, Three Sketches, Memories and various other pieces isolated. Having never been a prolific composer, Barber wrote much less after the failure of his opera Anthony and Cleopatra. A libretto by the filmmaker and opera director Franco Zeffirelli, the opera was commissioned for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in 1966. The opera received more favorably in 1975, when it was presented in the intimate setting of the Juilliard School with the partnership and directed by Gian Carlo Menotti, and was later recorded. The composer died in New York in 1981. Google machine translation: Samuel BARBER's original bio |
