Meredith Willson is a composer, conductor, flutist, pianist, librettist, American lyricist and writer, by his full name Robert Meredith Willson, born 18 May 1902 in Mason City (Iowa), dead the 15 June 1984 in Santa Monica (California). En 1916, at fourteen, Meredith Willson enters the Damrosch Institute of Musical Art in New York, where he studies the piano, the flute with Georges Barrère, composition with Mortimer Wilson and conductor with Henry Hadley. Of 1921 à 1923, he tours the United States, in Canada, in Cuba and Mexico, within the harmony orchestra of John Philip Sousa, where he plays the flute (including the piccolo). Of 1924 à 1929, he is a flautist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Arturo Toscanini in particular.
