Marin MARAIS
Marin Marais (31 May 1656-15 August 1728) was a violist and violist (musician playing the viola da gamba) and French composer of the Baroque period. Marin Marais was born in Paris May 31, 1656 in a modest family: his parents are Vincent Marsh, shoemaker and Catherine Bellanger. Only the brother of Vincent, a priest, is a higher social background. In 1667, Marin Marais becomes a child of ur hp in Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois, where he will meet Michel-Richard de Lalande (also child ur hp) and François Lalouette (Vicar). At sixteen, he left voluntarily Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois and tries to study with Sainte-Colombe to the bass viol which he learned during his training as a child of ur hp. This, perhaps feeling threatened by the very talented young musician said to him after six months he can not teach him anything more! Titon du Tillet reported that Marin Marais would be hidden under the cabinet work installed in the garden of Holy Dove to try and unravel the secrets of this master, but was discovered and chased after some time by the latter. Marais then enters the orchestra of the Royal Academy of Music directed by Lalouette - perhaps also through the influence of the latter. The director of the Royal Academy of Music was then Lully. In 1676, he married Catherine Darnicourt with which he would have been (according to Titon du Tillet) nineteen children, we found the traces of thirteen children in any case, the latter having been Jerome. The play "The tomb Marais Cadet" was probably written for him. Marin Marais in 1679 gets a load of "minstrel music of the House" in the Music of the King (Louis XIV). He combined this office with a musical career at the opera for forty years. In 1685 Marin Marais began writing pieces for viola, a book first published in 1686. That same year he began writing for the stage the dramatic idyll meets a great success but which have been found that words. After the death of Jean-Baptiste Lully, giving composers more freedom to play their works, Marais wrote Alcide (libretto by Jean-Galbert of Campistron), in collaboration with Louis Lully (eldest son of John the Baptist) which will be represented in 1693 with great success. It occurs as a violist in parallel with other musicians at the court of Louis XIV but also those around him (the Duke of Burgundy, Madame de Montespan, Madame de Maintenon, etc.. ). It is in these terms that Madame de Sevigne to her daughter realized in 1696 a letter of such a music session:"Young people, for fun danced to the songs, which is currently much in vogue at the Court. Who wanted played, and who would also listened to the beautiful concert Vize, Marais, Descoteaux and Philibert. After that we grabbed midnight and were married in the chapel of Hall Créquy. "A book published in 1692, Pieces en trio for flute, violin and treble viol, shows the directory used by Marsh for these concerts in the courtyard. In 1701, Marsh was asked to conduct a very important ceremony for the healing of the dolphin, bringing together two hundred and fifty musicians and singers during which will be interpreted, among others, two of his motets: Domine fac regem salvum and another that can not not know the title. After this important service, he became permanent conductor at the opera to 1704. He wrote again Alcyone, musical tragedy (shown in 1706) which also meet a great success. He knows then a period with less pomp failure of Semele to be his last lyrical work. Also new and shiny violists come to challenge its supremacy violist and composer Louis Caix of Hervelois and especially Antoine Forqueray. In 1708, Marsh asked for and obtained his eldest son, Vincent, resumed his position as violist with the King. However, he continues to play at the court until the death of Louis XIV, after which its activities are confined. It also continues the teaching and practice of his instrument and live in relative ease. Almost one year to the day after the death of his eldest daughter, Aug. 4, 1727, he died in his turn August 15, 1728. Google machine translation: Marin MARAIS's original bio |
