Louis PRIMA
Louis Prima (born December 7, 1910, died August 24, 1978) was a lyricist, composer, singer, actor and American jazz trumpeter. He was nicknamed the "King of singers" (King of the Swingers). Prima rode the musical trends of his time starting with a seven-piece New Orleans musicians in the 1920s, then a swing combo in 1930, a big band in the 1940s, a lounge band in Las Vegas in the 1950s , and a pop-rock band in the 1960s. In each of these musical explorations he displayed an exuberant musical personality. Prima was born into a musical family in New Orleans. His family had emigrated from Sicily and settled in the United States after a brief stay in Argentina. His older brother, Leon was a conductor known locally. Child, Louis Prima studied violin for seven years, and won first prize in a contest of amateur violinists. He began on trumpet. He mounted his first band at twelve years with his brother. His career was prolific and eventful, Louis Prima continually changing their home port, a wife and a record label. In 1932 he moved to Cleveland with his first wife Louise Polizzi, then to Chicago in 1933 where he recorded under the name of Hotcha Trio, his first records for the Bluebird label: Chinatown and Dinah. He went to New York in 1934 where he created the septet Louis Prima & his New Orleans Gang. They recorded for Brunswick and performed in jazz clubs most prestigious 52nd Street. Then he went to Los Angeles, where he appeared in several movies. In February 1936 he wrote one of his best songs: Sing Sing Sing, made famous by Benny Goodman. In 1938, he made the round trip to New York to record for Decca. Having signed to Varsity in 1940, he renamed his group temporarily Louis Prima & his Rhythm Orchestra Gleeby. In 1943, he recorded for the U.S. Army which will be his biggest hit: I'm Just A Gigolo, he recorded it for the firm Majestic at the end of the war. This work will be resumed much later by David Lee Roth and adapted into French by Carlos. After a stint at RCA Victor, he signed with Mercury in 1949 where he began a career as a duo with singer Keely Smith, who will also be his fourth wife. In 1951, he owned his own firm Robin Hood and signed with Columbia in parallel. In 1954, he and Keely Smith had a show in Las Vegas. They recorded another tube with Capitol in 1958: That Old Black Magic, which brought them a Grammy, then divorced in 1961. He lends his voice to the famous Monkey Jungle Book: King Louie (King Louie) directly inspired by Louis Prima and his band on stage that moved like monkeys from the scene of the film [1]. He sang the song I wanna be like you (I wanna be like you) whose words begin with Now I'm the king of the swingers is the nickname of Louis Prima (King of the swingers). Louis Prima was married once more and continued to sing hard, but success was not to go. Surgery for a brain tumor in October 1975, he fell into a coma for three years before dying in New Orleans August 24, 1978. Google machine translation: Louis PRIMA's original bio |
