Bernstein studied at Harvard University until 1939, then meeting the conductors Fritz Reiner, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Serge Koussevitzky and then he became an assistant in 1940 at Tanglewood. He was appointed assistant conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of New York in 1943 before returning to Tanglewood to lead and teach from 1951. From 1958 to 1973, he presented the Young People's Concerts on television broadcasts in which he demonstrates all his teaching skills to children who discover classical music in a fun way. He was appointed music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1958 to 1969 and an international reputation both as a conductor and the other as a composer include the musical West Side Story (1957).
