José PADILLA
José Sánchez Padilla, born in Almería May 28, 1889, was formed in his hometown, at the Madrid Conservatory and Italy before starting a music career. It was quickly integrated into the life of Madrid Theatre. His first success was The mala hembra (1906), a playlet in one act with libretto by Ventura de la Vega, grand-son of the famous writer of the same name. Ventura was a regular contributor to the early years of Padilla. A series of skits to act and Revistas (journals) follow, including Juan Miguel (1909), Los viejos verdes (1909, with Quinito Valverde) and Luzbel (1917, with Miguel Nieto). There was also an opera, La Faraona, with a libretto by Mantilla de los Rios. Later, Padilla spends time in Paris, where he wrote scores of two operettas, Pepete (1924) and Portuguese Symphony (1949), as well as many popular songs included in reviews of Moulin Rouge and elsewhere. These songs, which include El Relicario, The Violetera Valencia and the paso doble, brought him international fame and assured him a posthumous memory. Another of them, My Spanish Rose, was interpolated by Jerome Kern in his score The Night Boat, on Broadway. Despite his success abroad, Padilla continued to write scenes for Spanish. His best known songs are actually adaptations of numbers drawn from zarzuelas. Valencia comes straight from his delightful The well amada (1924), which has had notable success in Barcelona. The Spanish plays later include the insolent review Mucho ciudado con la Lola (1935), La Giralda (1939, libretto Quintero brothers) and The Violetera of prada (1941). The long-term task that had the best hearing may be in Hechichera The Palacio (1950). He died in Madrid October 25, 1960. Many people who say they do not know Padilla will certainly recognize his melodies. The best ones stay fresh despite treatment sometimes harmful by living quartets and dance bands of suburbs. El Relicario, for example, part graceful, rhythmic and sunny, refuses to die. The Valencia is irresistible and now, somehow, an unofficial national anthem. His qualities of sweet melodist and orchestrator allow it to communicate with a cheerful atmosphere of relaxed delight, and though all its zarzuelas are unable to return to the current directory, his songs will be remembered for years to come.
