Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICH
Dmitri Shostakovich was born into a family belonging to the Russian intelligentsia and revolutionary past: his grandfather, Boleslav, himself the son of a Polish revolutionary deported to Russia, had been exiled to Siberia for his involvement in the attempted the assassination of Alexander II in 1866. After studying piano with his mother, herself a professional musician, Dmitri Shostakovich in 1919 between Petrograd Conservatory, where he studied piano with Leonid Nikolayev and composition with Maximilian Steinberg. He befriended Alexander Glazunov, director of the Conservatory. His first THEREFOR, composed during his studies, is a Scherzo in F sharp. Although combining the learning of composition and piano, Shostakovich was destined for a career as a performer. He gives numerous concerts, playing mostly works by Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin and LisztIn February 1922, Shostakovich's father died of pneumonia. Shostakovich family is then in a precarious financial situation, leading to Dmitri be hired as pianist movie. In early 1923, Dmitri hand in cure in the Crimea, where he falls in love with Tatiana Glivienko, to which he dedicated his First Piano Trio. Takes place in 1926 creating the first symphony, CARRYING a mature business so exceptional in a boy of twenty years of conductors such as Bruno Walter, Leopold Stokowski and Arturo Toscanini adopted it immediately and assured him an internationally renowned. The same CARRYING earned its young author a congratulatory letter to Alban Berg. In 1927, the government commissioned his Second Symphony to commemorate the anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Shostakovich comes to compose two works so bold, his Piano Sonata No. 1 and its cycle of Aphorisms and composition of the second symphony allowed him to continue his experiments. The same year he obtained a diploma of honor at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Between summer 1927 and summer 1928, Shostakovich got down to writing the opera The Nose inspired by the eponymous story of Nicolas Gogol, from the Petersburg News. The score is decidedly avant-garde and makes wonderfully irony and sarcasm in the story of Gogol. The prewar periodDmitri Shostakovich (1935) His opera The Nose, created in 1930, was a huge popular success. After The Nose, Shostakovich's musical language is simplified. The composer is interested in the expressive possibilities of satire and comedy and approaches the light music. In 1929 he wrote his first film, "The New Babylon" and his Third Symphony. Shostakovich composed his first ballet then, called the Golden Age, which will be unwelcome THEREFOR. However, he composed a second ballet, Bolt, which will also be a total failure. In May 1932, Shostakovich married Nina Varzar. At the end of the year, he completed the composition of his second opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. The a work is created in 1934 and was a huge success, with three productions and some two hundred performances both in Leningrad and Moscow over the next two years, in addition to many performances outside the USSR. In early 1933, thirteen days after completing the composition of Lady Macbeth, Shostakovich began a cycle of 24 preludes for piano and composed his First Piano Concerto. The following year he wrote a Sonata for Cello and Piano. These last three works have nothing to do with stylistic experiments of the Nose. Shostakovich also composed his third ballet, The Bright Stream, who wins when it was created in 1935 a great success. The film people are meeting in January 1935 and pay tribute to the ideological dictatorship. The end of the year 1934 opened one of the darkest pages of Russian history: the assassination of Kirov marks the start of a terror of unprecedented proportions, giving the signal to persecution and mass of countless convictions. January 28, 1936 appears in Pravda an article titled: Chaos replaces the music, violent diatribe against the opera Lady MacBeth, probably dictated by Stalin himself [ref. required]. Stalin, accompanied by Mikoyan and Zhdanov, had indeed attended two days before a performance of opera at the Bolshoi, and had hated. Three types of complaints were made to the practice of Shostakovich: his music, made of "din, squeaks, squeals" his "petit-bourgeois formalism" which denied simplicity and socialist realism in favor of "hermetic" and his "coarse naturalism" of the characters on stage showing "cattle", "vulgar" [ref. required]. The article went so far as to threaten the existence of this sentence by Shostakovich heavy feel great folly of the Stalinist purges: "We play with Hermeticism, a game that could end badly" [ref. required]. Representations were then arrested, and that was the beginning of a heavy pressure on the Soviet political apparatus composer. February 6, 1936, Shostakovich suffered another stroke of fate with the publication in Pravda an article on his ballet grueling Clear Creek. Then a few days later, he was the subject of an official condemnation during a meeting of the Leningrad section of the Union of Composers. Many of his old friends while rival of attacks against it. Shostakovich became officially an "enemy of the people," a charge which, in the USSR for 30 years, often preceded a deportation. In June 1937, he was also summoned by the NKVD for questioning. The constant expectation of the worst dives in insomnia and depression. He is haunted by thoughts of suicide, which never cease to torment him all his life. The Symphony No. 4, composed between September 1935 and May 1936, is a reflection of his psychological state at the time. This overwhelming CARRYING will only be created in the 1960s. Indeed, Shostakovich decided to stop rehearsals led by the chief Fritz Stiedry. The official, Shostakovich withdrew from his own embodiment, the judging imperfect. But it is more likely that he yielded to pressure from senior levels. Forced to make concessions, Shostakovich gives his music the more traditional accents. His Symphony No. 5, whose very classical borrows from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, it allows a comeback. CARRYING with this officially described as "a response to Soviet artist to just criticism" [ref. required], the artist has simplified his style, but has not so far suppressed his personality. All the work may even be interpreted under the surface of a conventional language, as the mark of a deep rebellion against tyranny. The creation of the 5th Symphony was also the starting point of the composer's friendship with the leader Evgeny Mravinsky. In May 1938, Shostakovich composed his First String Quartet, then until 1941, is primarily involved in soundtracks. Between April and November 1939, he composed his Sixth Symphony.
