Charlie mingus1, born Charles Mingus, Jr the 22 April 1922 in Nogales, Arizona, and dead the 5 January 1979 in Cuernavaca (Mexico), is a double bass player, American jazz composer and pianist. He was also known for his anti-racist commitment.
He made a major contribution to jazz, both as composer and conductor, but also as an instrumentalist. Many musicians have gone through its different formations to then embark on impressive careers. His compositions, although melodic and striking, are not often repeated, which is perhaps due to their unconventional character.
His eccentric and often frightening temperament is almost as well known as his music. His refusal to compromise his artistic integrity and a number of traumatic racism-related experiences have caused numerous eruptions of anger on stage and elsewhere.
Much of Mingus' music is based on the energy of bebop and hard bop, with a strong influence of gospel. Mingus also frequently uses elements of the Third Stream, free jazz, New Orleans jazz and even classical music, while still avoiding categories and creating personal music. He is interested in collective improvisation and is very attentive to the interaction of each musician with the entire formation. He writes instrumental parts taking into account the specificities of his musicians, which brings him closer to the methods of Duke Ellington for whom he has boundless admiration.
Affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, he spends the end of his life in a wheelchair. The first symptoms of paralysis appear in the spring 1977, and the diagnosis is made on 23 November 19772. His last appearance on stage is at the State University Theater in Phoenix, 10147ArizonaArizona 1977. He was received by President Jimmy Carter at the White House on 18 June 1978 and died six months later in Cuernavaca, Mexico.Mexico
The Mingus Big Band, who continues to give concerts, was created after his death by his wife Sue Mingus (en), whose objective is to play the music of Mingus, in particular the many compositions which were discovered after his death.
