Camille SAINT SAENS
![]() Camille Saint-Saëns began piano with his great aunt, then with the composer and teacher Camille Stamaty (1811-1870). The latter urged Peter Maleden, composer, who teaches theory and composition. Saint-Saens proves to be a virtuoso: he gave his first concert in eleven years and caused a sensation with Beethoven's Third Concerto and the Concerto No. 15 K. 450 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Saint-Saens wrote plays and even his own cadenza for Mozart concerto!Alongside brilliant general studies, he entered the Conservatory at age 13 in 1848, where he studied organ with Benoist (1794-1878), composition with Halevy (1799-1862), and also receives advice from Charles Gounod (1818-1893). It leaves the Conservatory with the price of Organ in 1851. The same year, he tries the contest the Prix de Rome, but fails. In 1852, he won a composition prize nonetheless Contest Sainte-Cecile de Bordeaux for his cantata Ode to St. Cecilia. At age 18 he was appointed organist of Saint-Merry church in Paris, and founded besides his First Symphony. He quickly acquired a good reputation and the admiration of musicians such as Hector Berlioz and Franz Liszt. In 1857, he succeeded Lefebure-Wely with great Cavaillé-Coll organ of the Church of the Madeleine, and is visited by several musicians including Liszt, who was very impressed with his improvisations. Liszt and Saint-Saens describe as "the first organist of the world". Saint-Saens in that position for twenty years, that he saw as the happiest of his life. During all these years, the composer's activity is intense: it contributes to new editions of works by Gluck, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, but also. He defends the works of Schumann, and Wagner, which n is however not very well seen by the people from the Paris Conservatoire. But he also composed many: in 1858, the publisher pays Girod him 500 francs for delivery of the partition of Six duets for piano and harmonium, money he's buying a telescope. From 1861 to 1865, he obtained a position as professor of piano at the Ecole Niedermeyer, founded in 1853 in the ninth arrondissement of Paris. There, he taught including Gabriel Fauré and Andre Messager. Meanwhile, it will retry his luck in the Contest of Rome, and fails again, what does not prevent continued to compose prolifically. Thus, in 1867, his cantata The Marriage of Prometheus is rewarded in a contest jury consists of renowned composers such as Rossini, Auber, Berlioz, Verdi, Gounod and. The following year he composed in seventeen days only his Second Piano Concerto, because his friend Anton Rubinstein came to Paris, and needed something new to play!In the 1870s, Saint-Saens wrote regularly in newspapers including the Gazette Musicale, s and engages in a polemic against Vincent d Indy. Meanwhile, as the war between Germany and France broke out, the composer s commitment in the National Guard. Then he moved to England s. He played twice in Windsor before Queen Victoria, who wrote in his diary "it plays beautifully to the organ He also played some of his compositions on piano, and composes and plays beautifully". He uses his trip to study scores of Handel to the library of Buckingham Palace. C is only after the political turmoil that Saint-Saens returned to France, and founded in 1871, the National Society of Music, which aims to promote the dissemination of works written by contemporary French composers, in a context of French defeat against Prussia. Among the founders of this association, we also find Cesar Franck, Edouard Lalo, and Gabriel Fauré. This echoes the one of the traits important to Saint-Saens: chauvinism. For Saint-Saens was a nationalist, sometimes by excess fishing. 1872 was a bad year for the composer: his book The Princess lyrical yellow is a failure, and his great aunt, who had taught him the piano, dies. However, subsequent years will bring to their share of happiness composer: long remained a bachelor, he married in 1875 with Marie-Laure Truffot then aged 19. She is the daughter of an industrialist, Philip Rodrigues Truffot, also mayor of Le Cateau. But Saint-Saens is showing little interest in his new wife. Some sources claim that the composer was gay, and thus that his marriage was more a social constraint that a true desire. His wife bore him two children, two boys, who both died in 1878, one because of a fall, and other disease. The pair of Saint-Saens tears then, and the composer himself separated from his wife. On the artistic side, Saint-Saens is more likely: in 1877 he was awarded 100,000 francs by a patron, Albert Libon, who died the same year. Saint-Saens created in 1878 when the Church of Saint Sulpice, his Requiem, which he dedicated to the memory of his benefactor, the same year, he plays at his own expense several works by Liszt, including symphonic poems , who also inspired form, since it is the first French composer to write. In the 1870s, it is not less than four tone poems that created Saint-Saens: The wheel of Omphale (1871), Phaeton (1873), The Dance of Death (1874), The Youth of Hercules (1877). In the early 1880s, the talent of Saint-Saens is publicly recognized, since he was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1881 and was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1884. In 1886, he composed two major works: the Symphony No. 3 with Organ, and Carnival of the Animals. The symphony is the symbol of gigantism in vogue at the time (recall that in 1889 will be built the Eiffel Tower): the introduction of an organ in a symphony, something that no one had ever yet been made, and more is built in France by the most famous organ factor of time, Aristide Cavaille-Coll, the symphony gives a new dimension. As for the Carnival of the Animals, it's a fun of this is: while Saint-Saëns is on vacation, he seeks to entertain friends and family. As s is a play of light and satirical (parody there a particular practice of Berlioz, the aria from "Barber" by Rossini and his own Danse Macabre), Saint-Saëns forbade the reading of practice of his lifetime. Only the section entitled The Swan is excluded from this censure, and become a "tube" for cello and piano. However, the same year, Saint-Saens broke with the Société Nationale de Musique, which had decided to play works by foreign composers. The year 1888 marks a turning point in the life of Saint-Saens, the composer lost his mother, from whom he was very close. This profoundly affects the disappearance. Therefore, her life changes: it nomadise, traveling extensively. The Algeria and Egypt are favored destinations, that the influence in his musical direction: Piano Concerto No. 5 is called "the Egyptian". It also occurs in Europe, Asia, the East, South America and North Africa. Then the composer returned to France, and moved to Dieppe s, where a museum in his honor was established in 1890. The same year he published a collection of poetry, Rimes Familiar, where stanzas, Sonnets and Poems diverse mix. He's also trying to write dramatic: The Writers' Cramp, prosaic little comedy in one act that he dedicated to his friends Algiers, and whose first performance took place at the Municipal Theatre of Algiers on 1 March 1892. Indeed, the composer continues to travel extensively in the 1890s, sometimes using false identities, perhaps to be quiet. In recent years, no fewer than 15 destinations, including Europe, Africa, South America. On the occasion of one of his trips to England, in 1893, the composer was named Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Cambridge, along with his friend Pyotr Tchaikovsky. 1896 is another year of recognition for the composer: June 2, he played at the Salle Pleyel in the fiftieth anniversary of his first concert in 1846. The same year, Fernand Castelbon of Beauxhostes, wealthy patron loves his region, Saint-Saens asks the help in raising funds for the renovation of arenas Beziers. C is thus that in 1898, the composer is organizing a concert to raise money: its composition Deianira, to a libretto by Louis Gallet, is represented. 8000 people took place in the arena to attend c is the consecration. The early twentieth century continued the consecration of the composer in 1900, his cantata The Celestial Fire, musical metaphor of the new Electricity Fairy, is represented at the opening of the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The awards and accolades showered: in 1900, Legion of Honor, Cross of Merit and in 1901 he was promoted to president of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1902, he was awarded the "Victorian Order". The following year, the great actress Sarah Bernhardt of the time control of a music scene in Saint-Saens for the representation of Racine's Andromache. Meanwhile, Saint-Saëns continued to write anything other than music: after The Writers cramp, he went back to the theater with his comedy The King Apepi, created at the Municipal Theatre of Béziers in August. In 1906 he launched his first tour in the U.S., giving many concerts in Philadelphia, Chicago, and Washington. The following year he was again publicly rewarded by becoming a Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Oxford. In 1908, he composes for film with the film The Assassination of the Duke of Guise. Then he returned again to his love of theater by writing a comedy in one act and in verse, Botriocéphale, created in Paris. In 1913, still a reward for the great composer: he received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, the highest honor. The following years were the occasion of many trips around the world including the U.S.. He wrote many articles against parallel German music, and of course, against the Wagnerian. But it is no longer loved in France as it was in the nineteenth century, because fashion has changed. The classic style of Saint-Saens is no longer appreciated as before. However, in the Anglo-Saxon countries, it is considered one of the best French composers. His tour of 1915 in the United States and won a great success. The year he died, in 1921, he was 86, he gave a concert at the Casino de Dieppe for the 75th anniversary of his debut as a pianist. Back in Algeria, he returned to Algiers to work on some partitions. December 16, he died, pronouncing, according to legend, these words: "This time I think its really the end. ". His body was repatriated to Paris, and a ceremony is held at the Madeleine Church. He is buried in Montparnasse Cemetery. Google machine translation: Camille SAINT SAENS's original bio |
