Marc Antoine CHARPENTIER
He went to Italy to study painting, but under the influence of the composer Giacomo Carissimi he studied music in Rome. In 1672, Molière fell out with Lully. He proposed to replace the latter Charpentier's music for his comedies-ballets at the Theatre-French. Thus Charpentier wrote music for intermissions of Circe and Andromeda, and sung scenes in The Imaginary Invalid. On the death of Mademoiselle de Guise in 1688, Charpentier was employed by the Jesuits in their Parisian establishments. He became music master of the College Louis-le-Grand, and the church of Saint-Louis, rue Saint-Antoine. It was during this period that he composed most of his book Sacred. In 1698, Charpentier was appointed music master of the children of the Holy Palace Chapel. His music draws its substance from a mixture of French and Italian styles, which it borrows many elements. He composed sacred works such as oratorios, masses, psalms, a Magnificat. He also composed several operas, sonatas, preludes for orchestra, carols instrumental. Marc-Antoine Charpentier, was largely forgotten until 1953, when it was revealed by his Te Deum, whose orchestral opening is indicative of Eurovision.
