Franz STRAUSS

Franz Strauss was a German musician and composer, born February 26, 1822 at Parkstein in Bavaria and died May 31, 1905. It may be best known as the father of Richard Strauss, the famous German composer. Born in Parkstein, near Bayreuth, he was one of the most famous horn players of his time. He took the place of the first horn at the Bayreuth Festival and, as such, participated in the first performances of all the operas of Richard Wagner. Wagner, whom he often opposed, however, wrote of him: "It is really unbearable Strauss but when he plays the trumpet you can not blame him". Franz Strauss made his first steps in music at age 7, when he plays the violin at a wedding. With his uncles Johann Georg Walter and Franz Michael Walter, he learned the clarinet, guitar and all the instruments of the brass family. At 15, he entered the service of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria as a guitarist. He continues to study the trumpet became his main instrument. In 1847, he joined the orchestra of the Bavarian court. He held this position until his retirement in 1889. Franz Strauss is also a professor at the Munich Academy of Music from 1871 to 1896, and he conducted the orchestra of amateur Gung'l Wilde from 1875 to 1896. In 1851 he married Elise Seiff with whom he has two children. But his son, aged 10 months, died of tuberculosis. His daughter and his wife die of cholera, three years after their marriage. He did not remarry in 1863 with Josephine Pschorr, daughter of a brewer. Their son Richard was born in 1864 and in 1867 their daughter Berta. He retired in 1889 and focuses on the career of his son. He died in 1905.
