Cirque du Soleil History 1982: The story begins in Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec (Canada) A group of young street performers known as the Club des Talons Hauts (the High Heels Club) decides to organize an entertainers' festival. 1984: Cirque du Soleil is born Cirque provides a totally new concept that includes a striking, dramatic mix of the circus arts and street entertainment. 1985: Cirque takes its show to Ontario (Canada) Cirque du Soleil performs in Ottawa, Toronto and Niagara Falls. 1986: La Magie Continue Cirque du Soleil takes La Magie Continue to eight other cities across Canada. 1987: Cirque visits California Cirque du Soleil visits Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Monica with We Reinvent the Circus. 1988: Cirque conquers North America After an appearance at the Calgary Winter Olympics We Reinvent the Circus goes to San Francisco, New York, Washington, and Toronto. 1990: A Nouvelle Expérience Nouvelle Expérience premieres in Montreal then goes to California. We Reinvent the Circus goes to London and Paris. 1992 Tokyo, Las Vegas and the birth of Saltimbanco Fascination opens in Tokyo. Cirque du Soleil joins forces with Switzerland's Circus Knie. Nouvelle Expérience plays is set up next to the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. Saltimbanco premieres in Montreal. 1993: Mystère in Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil moves into the Treasure Island Hotel with Mystère. 1994: Alegría premieres Alegría premieres in Montreal. Saltimbanco goes to Tokyo. Cirque du Soleil celebrates its tenth anniversary. 1995: Saltimbanco visits Europe Saltimbanco sets out with its spectacular white big top to Amsterdam, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Vienna. 1996: Quidam premieres Quidam premieres in Montreal. Saltimbanco plays in London, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Antwerp, Zurich and Frankfurt. Alegría sets out to tour Japan. 1997: A brand new International Headquarters Cirque du Soleil inaugurates its new International Headquarters in Montreal, Quebec (Canada). Alegría tours Europe. 1998: “O” and La Nouba premiere "O" takes to the stage at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. La Nouba debuts at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. 1999: Dralion premieres Dralion premieres in Montreal. Quidam begins touring European. 2000: Journey of Man Journey of Man premieres worldwide at IMAX theatres. 2001: Alegría visits New Zealand Alegría begins its Asia-Pacific tour. 2002: Varekai premieres Varekai premieres in Montreal. Cirque du Soleil makes its first ever stop in Mexico with Alegría. 2003: ZUMANITY premieres ZUMANITY premieres at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Quidam tours Japan. 2004: KÀ premieres KÀ premieres at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Cirque du Soleil celebrates its twentieth anniversary. 2005: Corteo premieres Corteo premieres in Montreal. Cirque du Soleil creates the opening ceremony for the XI FINA World Aquatic Championships. 2006: DELIRIUM and LOVE premiere DELIRIUM premieres in Montreal. LOVE premieres at The Mirage in Las Vegas. The Beatles REVOLUTION Lounge opens at the Mirage hotel in Las Vegas. Saltimbanco visits Chile, Argentina and Brazil. 2007: KOOZA and Wintuk premiere KOOZA premieres in Montreal. Saltimbanco begins an arena tour. In November, Wintuk begins performances at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York. |
