Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) is considered by many to be Spain’s greatest composer of the 20th century. He attended the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación, studying piano and composition. He was awarded the first prize at the school’s piano competition (by unanimous vote) in 1899. Falla moved to Paris in 1907, and later Granada and Argentina. During his travels and time in Paris, Falla met and became acquainted with numerous influential composers, including Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Albéniz. However, Falla’s interest in his native Andalusian music never faded (especially Andalusian flamenco style).
“La Vida Breve” (1904-05) is a two-act opera with a libretto by Carlos Fernández-Shaw. Andalusian dialect was originally written, although it was finally premiered with a French translation after years of attempted staging. The opera is set in Granada and depicts unrequited love and class inequality. Falla’s allegiance to his native Andalusian music is clearly displayed, including this Danza Española.
For SATB saxophone quartet, includes transposed score and parts. Altissimo is included in the soprano part to B, with optional 8vb. Duration approximately 4 minutes.
