Romances without words (Lieder ohne Worte) are brief pieces for piano composed by Felix Mendelssohn at different periods in his life. They occupy eight collections published between 1830 et 1868, five of which are dedicated to women. They mark the beginning of Romanticism in piano music.
We can compare the romances without words to the nocturnes of Chopin, from which the latter was inspired, because these pieces form a lyrical ideal of piano music. The piano must sing. The Romance without words takes on the expression of freedom, it's pure pleasure, free form.
Little appreciated at first, they were gradually delivered at the request of the publisher.
The shape corresponds to that of the sung lieder, often in form A B Ab Mendelssohn composed fifty Romances without words between 1828 (death of Schubert) et 1845. Five notebooks are dedicated to women, and the title of Romances without words appears in 1828 sous la plume de Fanny la s?ur du compositeur. Mendelssohn utilisera ce titre pour la première fois en 1830. Opus30 was composed between 1833 et 1834, and is dedicated to Elisa von Woringen. It was released in May 1835 in Bonn.
