Carl Mickael ZIEHRER
Carl Michael Ziehrer (or Karl Michael Ziehrer) is an Austrian composer and conductor, born 2 May 1843 in Viennain Vienna (Austria), where he died on 14 November 1922. Young Ziehrer learns music at the Vienna Conservatory, with Simon Sechter, and starts composing in 1862. The next year (1863), he is spotted by the editor Carl Haslinger (de) who decides to publish it, and at the end of that same year, he conducts his first concert in Viennain Viennain Vienna, for Haslinger's aim to compete with the Strauss brothers (Johann ii, Josef and Eduard). In 1867, he takes the direction of a new Viennese orchestra then, de 1870 à 1873, he is the conductor of a military orchestra, still in Viennain Viennain Vienna (note that in the meantime, after Haslinger's death ended 1868, he went to the publisher Ludwig Döblinger). And in 1873, he becomes the musical director of another Viennese orchestra, with which he performs at the Universal Exhibition of 1873 (in Viennain Vienna). As part of his conductor activities, Ziehrer tours Europe (Germany, Romania...) et, while conducting another Viennese military orchestra (de 1885 à 1893), he performs with him at the Universal Exhibition of 1893 (in Chicago, United States). Back in Europe, he still gets an important job in 1907, that of musical director of the balls of the imperial court (post where one of his predecessors was Johann Strauss I) that he keeps until 1915. Ruined by the First World War (his property is destroyed), Ziehrer dies in misery and forgotten in 1922, never having succeeded in winning against the Strauss. As a composer, however, we owe him a large corpus, rich with twenty-three operettas and around six hundred pieces for orchestra (waltzeswaltz, polkas, steps, mazurkas ...), dont certaines tirées de ses opérettes ? telle Liebeswalzer, waltz (opus) op 537 of 1911, from the operetta Die Liebeswalzer, created in 1908 ?. Note also that a German-Austrian film shot in 1944, but only released inMay 1949, Viennese girls (de), is dedicated to Ziehrer's life (it is directed by Willi Forst, further personifying the composer). Finally, two Ziehrer operettas were performed on Broadway (NY), Ein tolles Mädel (de 1907, adapted the following year under the title Miss Mischief) and Die Liebeswalzer pre-cited (de 1908, adapted in 1911 under the title The Kiss Waltz, with Robert Warwick).
