Bedrich SMETANA
Bed?ich Smetanaprononciation, born March 2, 1824 at the Litomy and died on 12 May 1884 in Prague, was a Czech composer. It is famous for his symphonic poem Vltava (Moldau in German), the second of a six entitled Má vlast ("My Fatherland"), and for his opera The Bartered Bride. Bedrich Smetana was born in Bohemia of a father brewer. The only one to reach adulthood among eleven children, he learned piano and violin as a child. In 1874, because of his deafness due to syphilis, he had to relinquish the post of conductor, and devoted himself exclusively to composition. In 1875, sick, Smetana took refuge in Jabkenice, a village in Central Bohemia, with his daughter ?ofie. Smetana was interned in a psychiatric hospital in Prague in 1883, and died May 12, 1884. He is buried at the cemetery in Prague Vy ehrad. Smetana was the first composer to use elements in his music specifically Czech. His operas are based on Czech themes, and he used a lot of rhythms and melodies of Czech folklore in his compositions. Brandenburgers in Bohemia, is the first opera written entirely in Czech.
